The United States has approved a request to purchase the AEGIS/SPY-6 AAW package for Germany, following a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process initiated two years ago.

“The U.S. Department of State has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Germany for an Integrated Combat System, support equipment, and support (sic). The total estimated cost is $11.9 billion,” a statement from the U.S. Department of State said.

According to the statement, the German government requested the purchase of eight shipsets of MK 6 MOD X Integrated Combat System (ICS) computing infrastructure based on AEGIS, eight shipsets of S-Band AN/SPY-6(V)1 Active Electronically Scanned Array radars, among other systems.

The principal contractors will be Lockheed Martin Corporation, based in Bethesda, Maryland, and RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia.

According to the statement, “the proposed sale would support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”

Additionally, the proposed sale would enhance the capability of the German naval forces “to meet current and future threats by improving national and territorial defense, as well as interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces.”
